2 (Lincoln, Abraham) Whitman, Walt "A Poet on the Platform. Walt Whitman as Lecturer. His Subject Lincoln's Death. . . ." in New-York Semi-Weekly Tribune (April 18, 1879)
New York 1879 First Edition Disbound Very Good
Complete, original disbound newspaper in very good condition with some short tears on the right edge, very shallow chips on the bottom edge, overall yellowing of the paper and mild creasing. Includes substantial, if not entirely complete, portions of Whitman's lecture on Lincoln at Steck Hall in New York. Uncommon in any condidtion. One of Whitman's most important speeches, the first paragraph of the article states, "The poet Walt Whitman made his beginning as a lecturer Monday night, at Steck Hall in Fourteenth Street. The subject was the death of Abraham Lincoln. He reads from notes, sitting in a chair, since he is much disabled from paralysis. He desires engagements as a reader of his own poems and a lecturer." A transcription of the lecture thus follows and runs to two and a half long columns. This is the original of Whitman's famous essay on Lincoln's death often anthologized, a remarkable Whitman item.
