(Sherman, William T.) "Sherman's March Through South Carolina--Road at the Swamp Crossings" in Harper's Weekly (March 4, 1865) New York 1865 First Edition Disbound Very Good David, Theodore and Wm Waud ORIGINAL AND COMPLETE ISSUE. NOT A REPRODUCTION IN ANY FORM BUT A RARE HISTORICAL DOCUMENT. Very good with mild wear to the spine (including split) where disbound and crease to upper corner of one page.. The condition of this historic document is remarkably clean and bright. Cover engraving by Theodore R. Davis of "Sherman's March Through South Carolina--Road at the Swamp Crossings" with story of p. 133. The sharp and bright black and white contrasts of this and all the illustrations of this issue are quite impressive. Also, editorial on "Sherman's True Victory," praising his infamous march through the South as indicative of the "cowed" nature of the South. Also of note are three engravings (sketched by William Waud" that serve as a two-page spread: Ft. Sumter in Charleston Harbor, two illustrations of "Sherman's March though South Carolina,--Advance from McPhersonville, February 1, 1865" and also "Burning of McPhersonville, February 1, 1865." Other illustrations: "Camp Ford, Texas" (full-page showing the cabin structures), "Charleston and Savannah Railroad through the Swamp," "Miss Mary Davis,' "Hon. Daniel S. Dickinson," and "The Double-ender 'Pontiac' Descending the Savannah River." Of special note is a 2/3 page map "...Illustrating the Field of Operations in Viriginia and the Carolinas" and a street plan of Columbia, S.C. Price:

(Sherman, William T.) "The Burning of Columbia, S.C." in Harper's Weekly (April 8, 1865) New York 1865 First Edition Disbound Very Good Waud, W.; A. Gardner; Theodore Davis Complete and original issue. NOT A REPRINT BUT THE ORIGINAL, RARE DOCUMENT. Very good+ with light wear to spine where disbound and stray foxing. With only one tiny, closed tear to bottom edge of front page, this copy shows only light wear and looks considerably younger than its age. This issue focuses on the "armies of the Union...bearing down heavily upon Richmond--the great military center up which the revolutionists have drawn back for their last convulsive efforts against the United States Government." The cover shows illustrations of "The Fifteenth Corps Crossing the South Edisto" and "The Raising of the Stars and Stripes over the Capitol at Columbia, South Carolina, both by Theodore Davis. Additional illustrations are a "Map of the Campaign against Richmond," Sherman's march through the Carolinas (moving up Cape Fear River and the charge at White Pond) by Davis; "The 'Richmond" Rescuing the Crew of the 'Enterprise,' (February 15, 1865), "Ruins of the Norfolk Navy-Yard" (based on a photograph by A. Gardner). Two full-page illustrations of the "Charge of Weaver's Brigade across the Salkehatchie, S. C." by Davis and "The Burning of Columbia, S.C. February 17, 1865) by W. Waud. (Sherman, Major-General William T.; Harriet Beecher Stowe) Harper's Weekly (March 12, 1864) New York 1864 First Edition Disbound Very Good COMPLETE AND ORIGINAL ISSUE, NOT A REPRINT. A RARE HISTORICAL DOCUMENT. In remarkable condition--still bright and clean with no tears except to spine where disbound. Two pages do show fading and there is scattered, light foxing. Excellent cover illustration of Major-General William T. Sherman sitting on a camp chair in a field with a messenger at his side taking notes with his horse waiting in the background. Spectacular center-fold collage, "Story of the Sea, Incidents in the Life of a Sailor" which shows in exacting details 8 stirring scenes in the story of a wreck of a ship and the rescue of its sailors. Literary review (in one paragraph) of the "Life of Lynman Beecher," the father of Harriet Beecher Stowe. "The work though edited by Charles Beecher is really the joint production of serferal members of the family." Remarkable full-page illustration of "Escaping Union Officers Succored by Slavfes" with story. This page is one of two showing fading but the picture is still very clear and stark. The fading is uniform, and with all the ink in the drawing, is hardly noticeable. Also of note is a full-page "Map of the Campaign in East Tennessee, Mississippi, Georgia, Alabama, and Florida." Chps. 3 and 4 of "Quite Alone" by George Augustus Sala. Also, seven illustrations: portraits of Major-General Palmer and Brigadier-General W.S. Smith, "Bridge Across The Holston, at Knoxville, Tennesee" by C.H. Perring, "Sanderson Florida, Occupied by Our Advance Before the Battle of Olustee," "Scene of the Fight at the Plank Bridge over Big Creek, at Barber's, February 19, 1864," "Barber's House at the Ford on Big Creek, Colonel Barton's Headquarters," and "Wreck of the 'Bohemian' as Seen the Morning after She Sunk."
